Mentha piperita, commonly known as Peppermint, is instantly recognisable for its refreshing menthol smell. The Peppermint Essential Oil is an incredibly versatile oil that relieves tension and relaxes a tired mind.
In ancient Roman mythology, Pluto was in love with a Nymph called Mentha (her name is where we get the word “menthol” from). Pluto’s wife turned Mentha into a plant in a jealous rage. Despite all his powers, Pluto couldn’t undo the curse, so he gave Mentha a sweet smell and bestowed many healing powers upon her leaves, so she would always be valued and never forgotten.
A hybrid plant of two different types of mint (Watermint and Spearmint), Peppermint has been enjoyed in its various forms for centuries by different cultures around the world.
It was cultivated in England in the early 17th century, but records show it was also used by Ancient Egyptians and in Traditional Chinese Medicine for its healing properties. Its fresh scent was enjoyed as a garden staple and the herbal teas made from its leaves provided digestive relief.
Naturally cooling and relaxing, Peppermint plants and their essential oils are known for their soothing properties. The icy-cold feeling that Peppermint oil has on the skin (thanks to its high levels of menthol!) relieves aching muscles after exercise and works to soothe itchy skin caused by bug bites.
Its minty, refreshing fragrance is also an effective remedy for weary travelers or mums with morning sickness.

● Peppermint Essential Oil may cause a burning sensation and sensitisation if used in high concentrations. Always dilute essential oils before use.

Diluting in a suitable carrier oil such as Sweet Almond Oil or Coconut Oil can make a great massage oil that not only soothes aching muscles but also lends the skin an icy cold feeling.
Blends well with Eucalyptus, Geranium, Grapefruit, Lavender, Lemon, Rosemary and Tea Tree essential oils.
If diffusing isn’t an option, directly inhale Peppermint Oil from the bottle to help relieve motion sickness. If the journey is too bumpy to hold a small open bottle, a few drops of oil on a handkerchief or in a face mask can help soothe a dodgy stomach and let you lay back and relax.
In extremely cold temperatures, Menthol can freeze and form crystals in Peppermint Oil. This is only likely in very cold climates or if you are storing your essential oils in the fridge - warming the oil up to room temperature will dissolve them very quickly.
Peppermint Oil is much more concentrated than Peppermint extract and it can be hard to determine the correct amount to use in a recipe - as too much Peppermint Oil can lead to an overdose. It’s not recommended to consume essential oils, especially without the recommendation of a medical professional.
